The primary ammunition used to fight a Social Security Disability case is medical records. Therefore, one of the most valuable things a disabled individual can do to get their disability benefits approved is obtain more medical treatment. Of course this is often a difficult proposition as many people who are trying to get disability benefits have limited financial resources to afford high quality medical treatment. For this reason it is important to consider various government programs that can assist you in obtaining more medical treatment. The primary government program that people turn to is Medicaid.

Medicaid Overview

Medicaid is an insurance plan for low income, legal US citizens between the ages of 19 – 65 years old. In order to qualify for Medicaid, families must have incomes less than 138% the poverty level. Families with incomes less than 100%-400% poverty levels get subsidies or grants. The chart below describes how these subsidies apply to families of different sizes.

Medicaid covers disabled individuals making less than $15,000 per year. Single households must bring in less than $1,300 per month and couples must bring in less than $1,750 per month to qualify for Medicaid. Typically, anyone granted Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits automatically qualify because SSI benefits do not exceed $1,000.
